Feeding the World

The idea is to use the technical and organizational skills acquired at Fazenda Rio Monapo to improve the lives and livelihood of the many neighboring subsistence farmers by organizing and assisting them in growing crops more efficiently while improving the soil at the same time. In this way, some of the negative effects of Global Warming and Climate Change are mitigated for the poor and vulnerable families, who live in the neighborhood.

A pilot project was started in 2022 with 50 families.

The project is built around community organization and common decision-making in groups of farmers. The farm has employed permanent staff to manage the whole project in full cooperation with the families involved.

Each family cultivates around 2 ha of land. One part with soy, for which the Farm finds the buyers, and one part with maize, beans, and vegetables which are mainly for their own consumption to assist in securing healthy and nutritious food for the whole year.

The Project provides seeds, needed chemicals, and plant nutrients as well as technical and organizational assistance. Water is supplied for the growing of vegetables.

The 50 families are organized into 3 groups with an appointed leader for each group. The groups have regular meetings in which they make decisions and share experiences. The clear organization of the participants and the ongoing assistance from the project management are keys to the success and expansion of the project.

Management of the project approaches donors to seek funding for its further development. The pilot project was started in 2022. It serves as an example and is already demonstrating the benefits for the families participating.

Below you can read statements provided by some of the 50 families.

Antonio João Mogemela

I like being part of this Jacaranda project, although we are not yet in the final phase of the project, I think we are on the right track, and I would like the program to reach more families. I have learned a lot in this project from seeding, weed, and pest control.

Atija Alfredo

The program mainly came to help us women, because from this production we will get the means to send our children to school. I would like to thank the Jacaranda company for giving us space for soybean production, as we have some scarcity of suitable land for soybean production here in the community.

I want to thank Jacaranda for its initiative, it is something very important, and we learned that unity makes strength. We are grateful that Jacaranda made the cultivation areas available to us, and it was really necessary for us to come together to take the project forward. We learned about managing the soybean crop with the company's technicians, and we also thank them for supplying agrochemicals and seeds.
